Slovenian President Nataša Pirc Musar said the European Union must overcome internal divisions and strengthen political unity to play a greater role in global affairs during a discussion at the Bled Strategic Forum 2026.
Speaking alongside Slovak President Peter Pellegrini, in a conversation moderated by Ali Žerdin, editor at Delo, Pirc Musar described the EU as “the third strongest economical power” globally but argued that it remained limited politically due to a lack of unity among member states.
She warned that confidence in the rules-based international system was being undermined, saying “international law is going down the toilet” as major powers increasingly act outside established frameworks. She added that “if we lose the faith to international law, that means the end of humanity and the development of modern democracies.”
Discussing relations with China, Musar said Europe needed a pragmatic approach towards Beijing while maintaining its principles. She also criticised the use of military force to resolve disputes and argued that allies should be able to challenge each other when they believe international norms are being breached.
