Russian President Vladimir Putin has called for the United Nations (UN) to adapt to changing global conditions while maintaining its role as the central mechanism for international cooperation during the SCO Plus meeting in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan.
Speaking under the theme “The UN as a Key Element of a Just World Order”, Putin said the organisation’s potential was “far from being fully realised” and argued that efforts should be made to increase its effectiveness and expand representation, including within the UN Security Council.
“The UN must certainly remain the main mechanism for coordinating interests,” Putin said, adding that the UN Charter should continue to serve as “the key source of international law.”
Putin also described the emergence of a multipolar world order as an “objective” and “irreversible” process, while highlighting the role of regional organisations such as the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) alongside the UN.
