Algeria has announced it is severing diplomatic relations with the United Arab Emirates (UAE), citing what it described as increasing “provocative or hostile actions” by the Gulf state despite repeated warnings.
The Algerian Government said it had exercised restraint before deciding to end relations. The UAE Ambassador was formally notified on Thursday (10 Sep) and given 48 hours to comply with the decision.

Algeria has opposed normalisation with Israel and has maintained a more cautious stance towards Gulf-led regional initiatives, while the UAE established diplomatic ties with Israel through the Abraham Accords in 2020.
The two countries have also held contrasting positions on conflicts and influence across the region, including the Sudan war, where the UAE has faced accusations of supporting the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) — allegations Abu Dhabi denies. These wider geopolitical disagreements, alongside disputes over Western Sahara and regional influence, have contributed to a broader deterioration in relations.
