Morocco has appointed its first female prime minister after King Mohammed VI asked Fatima Ezzahra El-Mansouri to form a government following the Authenticity and Modernity Party (PAM)’s strong performance in parliamentary elections.

El-Mansouri, a lawyer, former housing minister and former mayor of Marrakech, has begun coalition talks in a political system where no party typically secures an outright majority.

Key developments:

  • PAM won 97 of 395 parliamentary seats in an election with 38% turnout.
  • El-Mansouri must address youth unemployment, reported at 37%, and rising living costs.
  • Morocco is preparing major infrastructure projects ahead of the 2030 FIFA World Cup, co-hosted with Spain and Portugal.

The new government will balance economic pressures, public expectations and Morocco’s ambition to strengthen its global image.
