NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte has reaffirmed the alliance’s commitment to Article 5, stating that NATO is ready to “defend every inch of our territory” while stressing there is “no imminent military threat to NATO territory”.

Speaking at Tallinn University of Technology in Estonia on Wednesday (14 Oct), Rutte called on Allies to “prevent, prepare, and persevere”, Rutte urged continued investment in collective defence, stronger societal resilience and sustained support for Ukraine. He argued that Putin “wants to intimidate us, divide us, and weaken our support for Ukraine, but he will fail”, adding that investment, innovation and defence industry cooperation remain central to NATO’s deterrence.

Rutte also highlighted NATO’s transformation, pointing to Allies’ commitment to invest 5% of GDP on defence by 2035, alongside increased investment in advanced military technologies and a greater security role for European Allies and Canada.

He described Estonia’s defence spending, technology sector and civil resilience as a model for the alliance, concluding that unity and the “courage and creativity” of younger generations will help ensure NATO remains stronger than future threats.
