The UK Government has launched its “Be Ready” campaign, encouraging households to take simple steps to prepare for temporary disruption to essential services, including power, water, communications and transport.

The three-year initiative advises people to maintain basic supplies that could support them during emergencies such as severe weather events, while emphasising that preparation should be gradual rather than driven by panic buying.

  • Dan Jarvis MP, Security Minister, said preparedness measures could reduce pressure on emergency services and help prioritise those most in need.
  • Households are encouraged to keep supplies such as three days of non-perishable food, bottled water, medication and essential items.
  • The campaign follows similar resilience guidance used in countries including France, Ireland and the Netherlands.

Speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live, Prime Minister Andy Burnham said the guidance was not about encouraging panic buying, but about taking practical steps to ensure households are better prepared for disruption. He said recent events, including severe weather incidents, demonstrated the value of having basic supplies available, describing preparedness as a “sensible” response to the challenges of an increasingly uncertain environment.
