G20 Foreign Ministers opened a two-day meeting in Atlanta, Georgia on Friday (30 Oct), with discussions focused on security, economic resilience and international cooperation amid rising geopolitical tensions.

Hosting the gathering and speaking at the first plenary session on geopolitical issues, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the meeting represents a “moment of choosing” for the international community as countries face interconnected economic and geopolitical challenges.

Rubio warned that disruptions affecting energy and food supplies, supply chains, trade and freedom of navigation pose challenges to the global economic order. He called on diplomats to translate shared interests into practical cooperation, saying that “practical cooperation and real action” can reinforce global stability and deliver meaningful results for citizens.

The meeting highlights the broader challenge facing the G20 as geopolitical tensions increasingly shape economic discussions.

While Washington has sought to focus the agenda on trade, supply chain resilience, energy security and economic stability, divisions over the wars in Ukraine and the Middle East have created diplomatic challenges among members.

The presence of Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and disagreements over engagement with Moscow have underscored the difficulty of maintaining unified positions within a forum that brings together competing geopolitical interests.
