Sweden and India have upgraded their bilateral relations to a strategic partnership following talks in Gothenburg between Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The agreement aims to expand cooperation in innovation, emerging technologies, green transition, cyber security and supply chains. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen also joined discussions linked to broader EU-India cooperation and trade relations.
Speaking during a joint press conference, Mr Kristersson said Sweden and India share “very deep roots”, noting that Swedish companies have operated in India for “well over 100 years”. He added that around 300 Swedish companies are currently active in India.
Kristersson said the EU, Sweden and India recognise the “immense potential” of deeper cooperation “when the world is as complicated and unpredictable as it obviously is today”.
Key developments include:
- Sweden and India agreed to target a doubling of trade and investment within five years.
- Cooperation will expand across space, digital transformation and economic security.
- The partnership aligns with progress on the proposed EU-India Free Trade Agreement.
- Leaders also highlighted Nordic-India cooperation ahead of the India-Nordic Summit in Oslo on 19 May 2026.
Ulf Kristersson, Narendra Modi and Ursula von der Leyen emphasised closer cooperation between Sweden, India and the European Union on trade, technology, security and sustainability amid growing global uncertainty.
The leaders highlighted the importance of stronger democratic partnerships, with von der Leyen describing the EU-India Free Trade Agreement as the “mother of all deals”, while Mr Kristersson and Mr Modi framed the new Sweden-India strategic partnership as part of broader efforts to promote stability, innovation and economic growth.
