Türkiye’s main opposition party, the Republican People’s Party (CHP), has vowed to challenge a court ruling that annulled its 2023 leadership congress and reinstated former chairman Kemal Kilicdaroglu.

The decision removed current CHP leader Ozgur Ozel, prompting the party to describe the ruling as a “judicial coup”. Ozel said he would pursue legal appeals and remain at the party’s headquarters in Ankara.

Analysts said the ruling could deepen Türkiye’s political crisis, raise concerns over judicial independence, and affect economic stability under President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s government.

Key developments:

  • Turkish markets reacted sharply, with the lira hitting a record low.
  • The CHP appealed to the Supreme Election Board (YSK).
  • Economists warned of increased dollarisation and further pressure on inflation.
  • The next national election remains scheduled for 2028.

Political tensions have intensified as the CHP continues to face investigations and arrests involving senior opposition figures, including Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu.
