The European Union has announced new connectivity and community support programmes aimed at reinforcing peace and regional cooperation in the South Caucasus.
During a visit to Baku, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos met President Ilham Aliyev to discuss connectivity, energy cooperation, trade and support for border communities following progress towards peace between Azerbaijan and Armenia.
Key developments include:
- Up to €200 million in EU grants to support connectivity projects, with the potential to mobilise up to €2 billion in public and private investment.
- €20 million for peace-building initiatives, including healthcare, demining, skills development and support for local businesses.
- A new EU–Azerbaijan Connectivity Partnership and a regional investment conference planned in Baku before the end of 2026.
The EU also reaffirmed its commitment to expanding renewable energy cooperation and advancing discussions on a new EU–Azerbaijan partnership agreement.
