US President Donald Trump spoke to reporters following the 2026 NATO Summit in Ankara, where he was asked about his message to people living under communist and socialist governments, as well as those in democratic countries. He said he wanted “to get the word out” because he believes “what’s forming is communism in the country.”
Trump argued that communist systems attract support by promising benefits such as free housing, but said those promises ultimately lead to economic decline and hardship. “Communism is a disaster,” he said, adding that “when you go communist, you never come back.”
The comments are consistent with Trump’s recent speeches, in which he has increasingly characterised communism as a threat to the United States. In his Independence Day address, he described communism as “a cancer” and said “America will never be a communist country,” making opposition to communist ideology a recurring theme of his public messaging.
