Sweden will deploy a Patriot air defence unit to a NATO logistics hub in Poland from December, expanding its contribution to Alliance operations supporting the transfer of military and civilian assistance to Ukraine.
The announcement follows Sweden’s decision last week to contribute Gripen fighter jets to NATO’s Integrated Air and Missile Defence mission from October. Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson said the combined deployments would help protect the logistics hub and strengthen the security of NATO, Europe and Sweden.
Minister for Foreign Affairs Maria Malmer Stenergard and Minister for Defence Pål Jonson said the measures support NATO’s deterrence and defence amid the current security environment.
Key developments:
- Patriot air defence unit to deploy from December.
- Mission will protect NATO’s logistics hub in Poland supporting aid deliveries to Ukraine.
- Unit will operate under NATO Air Command.
- Deployment builds on Sweden’s Gripen fighter jet contribution that began in October.
The deployment reflects Sweden’s expanding role within NATO since joining the Alliance in 2024 and comes as members continue to reinforce the eastern flank following amid the Russia-Ukraine war.
Poland remains a key transit hub for military and humanitarian assistance to Ukraine, making the protection of its logistics infrastructure a strategic priority for NATO
