India and Ghana have strengthened bilateral cooperation after the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) and CSIR-Crops Research Institute (CSIR-CRI) signed a five-year Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) covering agricultural research, education and technology transfer.

The agreement was witnessed by Dr S. Jaishankar, India’s External Affairs Minister, and Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs.

  • Joint research will initially focus on tomatoes and high-yield crop varieties.
  • Cooperation includes post-harvest storage, cold-chain infrastructure and agricultural technology commercialisation.
  • Scientists, germplasm and technical expertise will be exchanged under a Joint Working Group.
  • India and Ghana also signed an MoU on biodiversity, promoting cooperation in scientific research, academic collaboration and capacity building between the Zoological Survey of India and the University of Ghana.

Speaking in Accra, Dr Jaishankar said the partnership aims to deepen the countries’ comprehensive relationship, expand cooperation in sectors including agriculture, health, mining and digital technology, and strengthen collaboration across the Global South.

He also highlighted support for UN reform and closer cooperation through the African Union, ECOWAS and the Commonwealth.
