India and Azerbaijan have moved to strengthen bilateral relations, with External Affairs Minister Dr S. Jaishankar meeting Azerbaijan President Ilham Aliyev and Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov in Baku on Friday (23 Oct).
The talks focused on expanding cooperation in trade, investment, energy, connectivity and security, as both countries seek to advance diplomatic engagement after a period of strained relations.
Key developments:
- India and Azerbaijan agreed to deepen political consultations and economic cooperation.
- Discussions covered the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC) and improving connectivity links.
- Both sides addressed security issues, terrorism and regional developments.
The renewed engagement comes after a period of diplomatic strain between New Delhi and Baku, particularly following Azerbaijan’s response to Operation Sindoor in 2025, India’s military operation targeting militant infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir after the Pahalgam terror attack. Baku condemned the strikes and expressed solidarity with Pakistan, drawing criticism from India.
The latest talks indicate an effort by both sides to manage differences through dialogue while focusing on areas of shared strategic and economic interest.
