The European Union (EU) and Kenya have agreed to strengthen their strategic partnership, focusing on trade, digital transformation and sustainable investment to support economic growth and regional development.

During talks in Brussels, Henna Virkkunen, Executive Vice-President for Tech Sovereignty, Security and Democracy, welcomed President William Ruto of Kenya and outlined new areas of cooperation under the EU’s Global Gateway strategy.

Key developments include:

  • €17 million for improvements along East Africa’s Northern Corridor trade and transport route.
  • €15 million to expand Kenya’s national fibre-optic network and improve digital connectivity.
  • €12 million for the digitalisation of land registration systems.
  • €10 million to support digital transformation, including artificial intelligence and digital trade initiatives.
  • €16 million for refugee camps to transition into integrated communities, recognising Kenya’s stabilising role in a fragile region and its commitment to hosting refugees.

The EU and Kenya also discussed progress on data-sharing arrangements and the implementation of the EU–Kenya Economic Partnership Agreement, aimed at increasing trade opportunities and supporting innovation, investment and regional connectivity.
