US President Donald Trump said a potential agreement with Iran could be reached within days, following a reported pause in hostilities between Israel and Iran.

Speaking to reporters before departing Queens, New York, Trump said he had held a “very good conversation” with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Referring to the recent exchange of strikes, Trump said Israel had responded after being attacked, adding that “now they’ve called it quits” and that both sides had agreed to stop.

Trump expressed confidence that negotiations were nearing completion, stating that negotiators were in the “final throes of what will be a very, very good deal” that would prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons. He added that an agreement could be signed “in two or three days”.

The US president also argued that diplomacy remained preferable to military escalation, saying “a lot of people are going to be killed” if bombing continued, adding: “Who wants to do that? I don’t.”

Trump said he believed there were no significant obstacles remaining and described the parties as “very close to having a very very good strong powerful deal.”
