US Vice-President JD Vance defended President Donald Trump’s agreement with Iran, saying the administration expects Israel, Arab states and other regional partners to work together to see the deal through.
Responding to reports that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was unhappy with the agreement, Vance said that did not reflect his own conversations with the Israeli leader. However, he criticised members of Netanyahu’s cabinet for publicly attacking both the deal and Trump personally.
Highlighting Washington’s support for Israel, Vance argued that “Donald J. Trump is the only head of state in the entire world who is sympathetic to the nation of Israel at this moment in time”, adding that he would not criticise “the only powerful ally” Israel has.
He also emphasised the scale of US military assistance, stating that “over the last three months, two-thirds of the defensive weapons that have protected your homeland have been built by American hands and paid for by American tax dollars.”
Vance concluded by urging Israeli ministers to focus on the country’s broader security challenges rather than its relationship with Washington, saying “The problem for Israel is not Donald J. Trump” and warning that “anybody in Israel who thinks their biggest problem is the president of the United States needs to wake up and smell the reality.”
Recent developments have added further uncertainty to the diplomatic process. Planned US-Iran technical talks in Switzerland were postponed after US Vice-President JD Vance delayed his trip, with the White House citing logistical challenges.
Despite the delay, US officials have said they remain committed to launching negotiations at the earliest opportunity, while President Donald Trump has continued to urge all parties to uphold the ceasefire and allow diplomacy to move forward.
