Countries including Iran, the United States, Cuba, China, and several European and Latin American nations have pledged assistance following two powerful earthquakes that struck Venezuela on 24 June.
The 7.2 and 7.5 magnitude earthquakes have killed at least 164 people, injured nearly 1,000, and caused widespread damage in Caracas and northern Venezuela.
Tommaso Della Longa, spokesperson for the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), said the disaster had placed additional strain on a country already facing economic, health and infrastructure challenges. UN Humanitarian Chief Tom Fletcher said international search and rescue teams were deploying to support the government-led response.
- 164+ fatalities and nearly 1,000 injuries reported.
- International rescue teams, medical staff and emergency aid are being mobilised.
- The UN says 7.9 million people already required humanitarian assistance before the earthquakes.
