The United States and Iran exchanged military strikes on Wednesday (10 Jun) following the downing of a US Apache helicopter over the Strait of Hormuz.

US Central Command (CENTCOM) said it conducted what it described as self-defence strikes against Iranian air defence, ground control and surveillance radar facilities. Two crew members from the helicopter were rescued and reported to be in stable condition.

Key developments:

  • CENTCOM said the operation was a proportional response to recent attacks on US forces and commercial shipping.
  • Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said it launched drone and missile attacks targeting US military assets in the region.
  • US officials reported no injuries to American personnel and said Iranian attacks did not successfully hit intended targets.

The exchange has increased pressure on ongoing diplomatic efforts to secure a more durable US-Iran ceasefire and advance discussions related to Iran’s nuclear programme and regional security.
