Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan have launched the Canada-Türkiye Strategic Partnership in Ankara on Thursday (22 Oct), establishing a framework to expand cooperation across trade, investment, energy, technology and security.
The three-year action plan aims to advance negotiations towards a potential Canada-Türkiye Free Trade Agreement, strengthen collaboration in sectors including defence, aerospace, artificial intelligence and critical minerals, and increase energy cooperation covering liquefied natural gas, nuclear power and renewable technologies.
As NATO Allies, Canada and Türkiye also committed to deepening security cooperation, including discussions related to Ukraine, the South Caucasus and the Middle East. The partnership builds on 83 years of diplomatic relations, with leaders highlighting economic potential while emphasising the need to turn agreements into practical outcomes.
The launch of the Canada-Türkiye Strategic Partnership reflects wider efforts by both countries to strengthen resilience amid shifting geopolitical dynamics. Prime Minister Mark Carney said that “no country builds strength alone”, arguing that resilient states rely on “collective resilience” through partnerships with trusted allies. He highlighted Türkiye’s strategic position, economic potential and defence capabilities, stating that bilateral trade growth in recent years had “barely begun to tap the potential” of the relationship.
